The southern humpback whales come from Antartica to breed and calve in the warmer Tongan waters. They arrive in July, and usually stay until around mid October. Generally the peak whale swimming season is August and September with these two months being the best time to swim with whales. We do however start swimming with the whales from mid July and continue swimming with them well into October. Each month holds different types of interactions, and each interaction is unique and exciting.
No. Scuba diving with whales is not permitted in Tonga.
It is important to follow the guidance of your whale swimming guide at all times. In our personal experience 8/10 times when diving under the surface the whales tend to swim off. In certain circumstances, and only under the guidance of the whale swim guide the conditions might be right and you will be able to.
We have two different adventures on offer- either a live aboard charter or accommodation at The Beach Barn. Our live aboard charters are for a minimum of 5 days and you cannot take a sailing day trip. Our home base is located on the remote island of Nomuka which is not easily accessible therefore making day trips impossible!
